Rise early for a 6-hour drive in a private 4x4 safari vehicle to Amboseli National Park, bordering Tanzania, with stops to stretch your legs and take in the rural scenery until the tarmac dissolves into red dirt roads. If long car journeys aren’t your thing, at an additional cost, a direct flight and a transfer will have you there in just a few hours. Your lodge lies in the shadow of Mount Kilimanjaro looming in the distance. Upon arrival, check in at the luxurious Angama Amboseli. Arriving at Angama Amboseli feels like stepping into a postcard. Here, Super Tusker elephants move through forests of fever trees and across the plains, all below a magnificent backdrop of Mount Kilimanjaro. Set in the heart of the 5,700-acre Kimana Sanctuary, Angama is 'glamping' at its most elegant, and the rooms are a blend of canvas, concrete and rattan that fit right into the scenery. Spend time admiring the nature-inspired works in the art gallery, or watching the real-life versions meander around camp. The infinity pool even has a drinking trough below, just for the elephants to enjoy a drink and a splash.
Kimana Sanctuary is the first community-owned conservancy in Kenya, totalling 844 Maasai families. With this in mind, all the 10 detached suites have been constructed in gorgeous, contemporary African design – sustainable and locally sourced. The suites are a mix of canvas roof with concrete walls – spacious, private, classy. The natural, earthy colours will welcome you back to glorious comfort after a long day in the bush. It’s important to mention the views again – all the rooms, indeed the whole camp, have been specifically constructed so you can see the mighty Kilimanjaro at all times!
After breakfast, proceed by road to Tsavo West National Park, a journey likely to take between 5-6 hours. Enjoy the vistas and panoramic views of the Kenyan countryside. Upon arrival at Tsavo West, check into the luxurious Finch Hattons Luxury Camp. Finch Hattons Luxury Camp in Tsavo West is named after Denys Finch Hatton, one of the early British explorers, conservationists and safari pioneers. This luxury bush camp is found on a 35-acre concession in the southern corner of Tsavo National Park. The camp overlooks three spring-fed pools that attract some of the many game in the area, from herds of buffalo and elephant, to pods of hippo, lion and leopard.
Finch Hattons Luxury Camp is perfectly positioned to give you terrific views of both Mount Kilimanjaro and the magnificent Chyulu Hills. The area's volcanic past is evident in the "Shetani" (meaning The Devil) lava flow which is 8 km long, 1.6 km wide and 5 km deep! The landscape varies from open grasslands, scrublands and acacia woodlands to swathes of riverine vegetation and rocky ridges, ensuring a diversity of wildlife; buffalo, bushbuck, eland, giraffe, hartebeest, impala, leopard, lion, oryx, wildebeest, zebra, hippo, and black rhino. There are over 500 bird species – a twitcher's paradise
After breakfast, a 2-hour transfer will take you to Voi Station in good time for the midday train to Mombasa. This journey whisks you to the coast in a couple of hours, but should you want to keep to a private car, this can be included although the journey will be longer. On arrival transgfer to Voyager Beach Resort & Spa. Voyager Beach is ideal – a seaside resort with a sociable vibe that's perfect for families or sociable travellers. While it's hardly a remote island getaway, the resort offers both fun and relaxation in equal measure. It lies on pretty Nyali Beach, near Mombasa, in a colour palette of white sands, ocean blues, and greens. There's room for a huge number of guests, and activities for nearly every hour of the day. While there are plenty of quiet corners to slip into, we'd recommend this destination for some really happy family fun.
Spend your days doing as little or as much as you please. If your modus operandi is to decompress on the beach or next to the swimming pool, there is no better place to do this. Meanwhile, the kids (and grown ups) should visit the charming butterfly pavilion with experts on hand who happily share their wealth of knowledge, and don’t miss the turtle hatchery during March and September to see minute hawksbill and olive ridley turtles. On your last day, why not break up the sunbathing with an invigorating massage or beauty treatment at the lovely spa. If you can summon the energy, there’s tennis, beach volleyball and a giant chessboard, perfect for children who can burn off steam. Round it off with a celebratory supper in the alfresco restaurant accompanied by live music and traditional cultural shows.
Say goodbye to the sandy, pristine and idyllic beach and transfer to Mombasa airport for onward travel
